The bidon is the least considered purchase in cycling. Most riders end up with whatever came free at a race expo, ride it until it develops a permanent smell, then replace it with another free one.
It is also the piece of equipment you interact with more than anything except the bars and the pedals. On a three-hour Australian summer ride you will reach for it forty or fifty times, usually without looking, often in a bunch, sometimes on a descent.
How much water you actually need
Most riders under-drink, and in Australian conditions the gap between what you drink and what you lose gets large fast.
Sweat rates vary enormously between individuals, but a rough working range for a moderate effort is somewhere between 500ml and a litre per hour. In heat and humidity, at a hard effort, it climbs from there. A three-hour ride at 30 degrees can easily put you two litres down.
The practical implication: one bottle is not a three-hour ride in an Australian summer. Two bottles gets you closer, and past about two hours in real heat you should be planning a refill stop rather than trying to carry everything from the start.
Dehydration does not announce itself politely. Performance drops measurably before you feel properly thirsty, and the first symptoms are usually that the effort feels harder than the numbers suggest and your concentration slips. In a bunch, that second one matters.
Bottle size, and the trade-off nobody mentions
Bidons generally run somewhere between 500ml and 750ml. Bigger sounds obviously better, and it is not that simple.
Larger bottles are taller, and on smaller frames a tall bottle in the seat tube cage fouls the down tube bottle or will not clear the frame at all. Riders on 49cm and 52cm frames routinely find that a 750ml bottle simply does not fit in both cages.
Larger bottles are also harder to get out of the cage one-handed at speed, because there is more of the bottle gripped by the cage and more weight to control.
Our bidons are 550ml, which is the size that fits cleanly in essentially any road or gravel cage on any frame size, and comes out easily mid-ride. Two of them is 1.1 litres, which covers most rides under two hours comfortably and gives you a sensible base to work from on longer days with a refill planned.
If you routinely ride four hours in summer heat without stopping, you want more capacity than any two bottles will give you, and the answer there is planning water stops rather than buying a bigger bidon.
The valve is the part that matters
This is the difference between a bottle you enjoy using and one you tolerate.
Flow rate. A narrow nozzle means you are sucking rather than drinking, which is genuinely difficult when you are breathing hard. A wide-bore high-flow valve delivers a proper mouthful with a light squeeze. On a hard ride this is the difference between drinking enough and drinking a bit.
Sealing. A self-sealing valve shuts when you stop squeezing. Bottles without one leak into your cage, down your frame and onto your bottom bracket, which over a season does your bearings no favours at all.
Opening without teeth. Plenty of cheap bidons need you to pull the nozzle up with your teeth. It works, and it also cracks the valve over time and is a decent way to chip a tooth on rough road. A valve that stays open and seals on flow is better.
Ours use a high-flow self-sealing valve, which is the combination worth looking for regardless of whose bottle you end up buying.
Grip, and why it matters more in summer
A smooth-sided bottle is fine with dry hands. Add sweat, sunscreen and three hours of fatigue and it becomes something you fumble.
Dropping a bidon in a bunch is not a minor event. It bounces, it goes under wheels, and it causes crashes. This is why bunch ride etiquette treats a dropped bottle as something you call out immediately.
Textured side panels give you something to hold when your hands are wet. It is a small design detail that only reveals its value at the moment you would otherwise have dropped it.
Why your bidon smells, and what actually fixes it
Every rider has opened a bottle from the bottom of a kit bag and been hit by the smell. The cause is straightforward: sugar residue plus moisture plus warmth is an ideal environment for mould, and a sealed bidon left in a car boot in summer is close to an incubator.
The fix is mostly about what you do in the first ten minutes after a ride, not what you do a week later.
Rinse immediately. Not when you get around to it. Sports drink residue that dries into the valve is dramatically harder to remove than residue rinsed out while wet.
Dry it open and upside down. A capped wet bottle stays wet. Stand it upside down with the valve open so air moves through.
Pull the valve apart periodically. Most mould lives in the valve assembly rather than the bottle body. If it comes apart, take it apart every few weeks.
For a bottle that has already gone. Warm water with a spoon of bicarbonate of soda, left overnight, then scrubbed with a bottle brush, will rescue most of them. White vinegar works too. If neither shifts it, the bottle has had a good life and it is time for a new one.
Dishwashers are a mixed answer. The top shelf on a normal cycle is usually fine, though repeated high heat will distort the plastic and shorten the bottle's life.
Cage fit
A bottle that rattles in the cage is annoying and a bottle that ejects on a rough descent is a hazard to whoever is behind you.
Standard bidon diameter is essentially universal across road cycling, which is why a bottle from one brand fits a cage from another. Bottles that deviate from it, usually aero or insulated designs, will not sit properly in a standard cage.
If your bottles eject over rough road, the cage is the problem rather than the bottle. Cages lose tension over time, and a metal cage can usually be bent gently inward to restore grip.
What goes in it
Water for anything under about an hour. Past that, in Australian heat, you are losing meaningful sodium and replacing only water, which is how riders end up with cramping late in a ride despite drinking plenty.
An electrolyte mix in one bottle and plain water in the other is the setup most experienced riders land on. It gives you the choice of what to drink rather than committing your whole supply to something sweet.
Avoid filling a bidon with anything containing milk or protein unless you plan to clean it within the hour. That smell does not come out.

Valve flow rate and grip are the two things that matter day to day. Size should be dictated by your frame and your cages rather than by wanting the biggest number. Rinse it the moment you get home and it will not smell.
