So you have got your fresh Caffeine and Cranks kit. We want to make sure it lasts season after season.
Cycling kit is technical apparel. It is made from high-performance fabrics that need a little more love than your standard cotton t-shirt. Follow these simple steps to keep your gear looking sharp and performing at its best.
Cold Wash Only: Heat is the enemy of elastane (Lycra). Always wash at 30°C or below.
No Fabric Softener: Never use fabric softener. It coats the fibres and blocks the moisture-wicking technology, meaning you will stay sweaty on the bike.
No Tumble Drying: The heat from a dryer will cook the elastic grippers and chamois. Always line dry in the shade.
1. Prep your kit Before throwing it in the machine, zip up all jerseys and gilets. An open zipper is like a little saw blade in the washing machine and can snag or tear other delicate fabrics. Turn your bib shorts inside out to protect the logos.
2. Use a delicates bag If you are washing your kit with other clothes (like velcro gloves or jeans), always use a laundry bag. This prevents friction and pilling.
3. The Wash Cycle Select a "Gentle," "Delicates," or "Hand Wash" cycle on your machine. Use a standard liquid detergent. Avoid heavy-duty powders as they can leave residue in the chamois.
4. Drying Hang your kit out to dry in the shade. Direct Australian sun is harsh and can fade colours and degrade the fabric over time.
We know you need to slip-slop-slap, but try to avoid getting thick sunscreen directly on the white sections of your kit or the leg grippers, as it can sometimes cause staining or material breakdown.
Treat your kit well, and it will look after you for thousands of kilometres.
